The Edge of Gruen: Shopping Malls and Suburbia

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The Architecture and Design Film Fest starts this Friday at the Music Box. You have a chance to see a number of amazing films on mid-century and Modern architecture and landscapes including Eames: The Architect and Painter, The Pruitt-Igoe Myth, and The Gruen Effect: Victor Gruen and the Shopping Mall. Sunday’s 3:15 screening of The Gruen Effect will be followed by a panel discussion sponsored by the Save Prentice Coalition. WBEZ Architecture Contributor and blogger Lee Bey will moderate the conversation between architect Peter Schlossman of Loebl Schlossman and Hackl (previously Loebl Schlossman and Bennett), architect John Macsai, and Anthony Rubano of Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. They will examine the history and design of Chicago’s regional shopping malls, their radical affect on the suburban landscape, and how the mall shaped our American way of life.
